Vokiečių 6

Vokiečių St. 6, Vilnius

II–V 15–19 val.
VI–VII 11–19 val.

Vokiečių 6 is dynamic and always changing, just like the city itself. Every year, it hosts two or three exhibitions, based on research, that examine life in Vilnius, telling the story of the city and its people. Vokiečių 6 invites visitors to look into their everyday surroundings and find something unexpected. The main aim of Vokiečių 6 is to educate residents who are involved in their city and know it well. Until 2025, this branch of the museum was known as the Vilnius Museum.

Arrival

Vokiečių St. 6, Vilnius

II–V 15–19 val.
VI–VII 11–19 val.

The Vokiečių 6 branch of the Vilnius City Museum is in the Old Town at Vokiečių St 6. It is easy to reach on foot, or by bicycle, car or public transport. There are bicycle racks close to the museum. The nearest public transport stop is ‘Rotušė’, on the route of the number 89 bus. The ‘MO Muziejus’ stop is 550 to 600 metres away, where the buses 1G, 11 and 53, and the trolleybuses 1, 2, 7 and 20, stop.

If you are coming by car, you can park on Vokiečių St. The parking places here are in the blue parking zone, where the cost of parking for one hour is 2.50 euros.

Approaching the museum from the Town Hall (Rotušė), you will find the museum on the left-hand side of Vokiečių St. The museum shares an entrance, an archway with metal gates (they are open during working hours), with the Backstage Café. The width of the entrance is 95 centimetres. There is quite a steep ramp in front of the entrance.

Once you turn into the archway, you will see the Backstage Café on the left. You will reach the museum’s entrance if you go further down the hallway. By the door, on the right, you will see a large poster for the current exhibition.

Important details

Bicycle stands can be found across the street from the museum on Vokiečių St by the monument to Barbora Radvilaitė. For the safety and convenience of other visitors, please do not leave bicycles in the museum’s hallway.

The cloakroom is by the museum entrance and offers lockers for personal belongings and a space to hang outerwear. Visitors can also leave their umbrellas here. Please note that the cloakroom is not locked, so visitors are responsible for the safety of their own belongings.

The WC by the museum’s entrance can be used by both visitors to the museum and customers of the Backstage Café. There are more WCs at the back of the museum’s exhibition space, including some for children (with smaller toilets) and people with disabilities. These WCs can only be used by museum visitors. There is also a changing station for babies.

The museum has a reading room full of books about Vilnius. There is also a workstation. You can access the reading room by purchasing a museum ticket.

The museum’s ticket office also has a small gift shop where you can purchase exhibition souvenirs and books about Vilnius.

The Backstage Café is just next to the museum. Please note that the café’s working hours differ from the museum’s working hours.

The exhibitions at Vokiečių 6 change twice a year, in January and July. The museum is temporarily closed for about three weeks in January and July while the exhibition space is being prepared. We sometimes arrange exhibitions in other parts of the city. You can find exhibition information on our website and in social media.

Exhibition openings are open and free of charge for all visitors.

Our volunteers are an important part of the museum community. Almost every weekend, you can ask them questions and hear them tell stories about the exhibitions on display. You can identify volunteers by their volunteer IDs.

There are fewer visitors to the museum on workdays from 3pm to 5pm. If you want to visit the museum at a quiet time, we do not recommend visiting on the last Sunday of the month or on family days (the Saturday mornings in the middle of the month that are dedicated to families).

Most of the events that take place at the museum (book presentations, lectures, discussions, etc) are free of charge. Visitors are allowed in half an hour before the beginning of an event (remember that we might be preparing the venue for visitors, arranging chairs, for example).

Entry to the museum is free of charge on the last Sunday of the month. The museum’s working hours on this day, as on regular Sundays, are from 11am to 7pm.

Look out for the mailbox on the way out of the museum with the question ‘What do you think?’ We invite you to fill in a short questionnaire about your visit, and drop it in our mailbox. We also look forward to receiving your feedback, observations and comments via email at info@vilniausmuziejus.lt

The Vilnius City Museum welcomes families with children of different ages. We do our best to make it convenient and relevant to every member of the family.

We try to make the museum a place where children can be curious and feel at ease! In every exhibition you will find parts that have been specially created for children: alternative routes, activity tables, or special tasks. A visitor coordinator or volunteer will gladly help you find some suitable activities. Children under the age of seven and schoolchildren with a pupil’s ID can visit the museum free of charge.

We host a family day one Saturday morning every month, during which we offer activities for all the family and for children. Follow the Vokiečių 6 newsfeed to find out about specific dates and programmes. Participation in family day activities is free of charge with a museum ticket.

A changing table can be found in the WC at the back of the exhibition space (marked with the appropriate symbol).

Visitors can feed their baby anywhere in the museum. If you would like a quieter area, ask a museum employee or a volunteer to direct you to one.

You can view the exhibition easily with a pram or a wheelchair. Prams and baby carriages can also be left in the hallway by the entrance. There is a small difference between the two levels of the exhibition space, but you will be able to move easily from one level to the other via a ramp.

More about Vokiečių 6

Vokiečių 6 also seeks to achieve the following:

  • To mobilise and empower various communities in Vilnius. The branch initiates and implements projects that are aimed at different groups of residents of Vilnius: Roma, the residents of supposedly boring areas, and so on. It involves local people in the development of its content.
  • To be as accessible as possible for people with disabilities. This branch of the museum is guided by a strategy of increasing accessibility, which is implemented in consultation with service users and their representative organisations.
  • To be the most family-friendly museum space in Vilnius.
  • Vokiečių 6 organises exhibitions not only at its Vokiečių St premises, but also in other areas of the city, in the districts of Viršuliškės, Vilkpėdė, Baltupiai, etc. We focus on collecting micro-narratives and oral history. We record and preserve the memories of citizens, and we often ask for help from residents in reconstructing the details and atmosphere of 20th-century Vilnius as we explore its history.

It is now customary for the branch’s exhibitions to be accompanied by guides using Lithuanian sign language, as well as regular audio guides. Some exhibitions can also be experienced by the visually impaired, for whom we provide audio description guides.

The curators at Vokiečių 6 create two or three special educational programmes for each temporary exhibition tailored to different age groups. The monthly family days on Saturday mornings offer a new educational programme each time.

Vokiečių 6 opened its doors to visitors in the spring of 2021. It is currently based in a temporary venue, and hopes to move to the Kirdiejai Mansion (at Barboros Radvilaitės St 4) by the end of 2027. In addition to temporary exhibitions, the Kirdiejai Mansion will also host a permanent exhibition about Vilnius, as is the norm for city museums. It will also house the administration of the Vilnius City Museum.
