We invite you to the opening of the exhibition “The Contrasts of Markučiai” on April 29 at 6:00 PM. During the event, the exhibition will be introduced by its curator, and visitors will have the opportunity to meet and engage in person with the local artists whose works are on display.
//
Walking through the Markučiai district, one is struck by its contrasts. On one side, newly built high-rise apartments tower into the sky, and wooden shacks huddle next to them. The Vilnelė River marks the boundary between the city’s asphalt and forest meadows. In this district, contrasts become a daily companion — they shape not only the environment but also our relationship with it.
The exhibition “The Contrasts of Markučiai” invites visitors to explore these layers through the eyes of local creators. It features works by artists living in Markučiai: watercolours by Irena Shu, photography by Kotryna Misiūnė, and paintings by Andrius Kviliūnas. Irena works in the medical field and creates various techniques in her free time; Kotryna is a journalist and documentary photographer; Andrius is a painter and video artist. Although their work explores different themes and employs distinct visual languages, within the manor space they meet, creating new connections and meanings.
In this exhibition, Markučiai Manor reveals itself not only as a historical site but also as a living communal space. The museum is not a neutral backdrop — its architecture, interior, and natural light become an active part of the works, shaping the relationship between the artwork, the environment, and the viewer.
The exhibition will be on view at the museum until June 30*. It can be visited during museum opening hours with an admission ticket: Tuesday–Friday: 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM Saturday–Sunday: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM
We would like to thank those who contributed to the realisation of the exhibition: Vidas Poškus, Helmutas Šabasevičius, and Eglė Ridikaitė.
* From May 29 to June 22, the Vilnius Old Theatre will host the performance “Uncle Vanya” at Markučiai Manor, therefore it will not be possible to visit the exhibition.
